Why the flu disappeared

The flu disappeared because of distancing, masks, and other restrictions. Covid didn’t because it has a higher R0:

Disease R0 Restriction-related ΔR R after restrictions
Flu 1.3 −1 0.3 — disease disappears
Covid-19 3.3 −1 2.3 — disease continues to spread

Tech companies ban Trump and co.

Apple, Google, Amazon, Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Discord, and Snapchat have banned Trump and his closest allies. They have a right to do this.

Nevertheless, such a purge has never happened before, and this should be alarming. These companies could at any point go beyond banning myth-spreaders and start censoring everyone who disagrees with certain positions.

I protect myself against similar bans by self-hosting as much as possible, not relying on the cloud, and preferring technologies to services.

Being immune to cancel culture is more important than ever.

Pandemic havens

Tax havens are territories where individual money is never seized by the government.

Pandemic havens are territories where individual lives are never altered by the government because of a disease.

A pandemic haven would:

  • impose a constitutional ban on governmental restrictions to normal life,
  • encourage voluntary testing, tracing, and isolating,
  • have enough beds, medicines, and vaccines for all,
  • allow all experimentation that participants consent to,
  • introduce visa-free immigration from locked down lands,
  • rely on private initiatives to stop the spread,
  • send an individualistic message: if you become sick, it’s likely because you made a wrong choice.

What I love about flying

When boarding a plane, one smells burning fuel, a smell unmatched by any other.

Taking off, acceleration and turbulence make for a fun rollercoaster ride. At the same time, it’s worthy to marvel at the view that no satellite photo can match:

Just a speck of sugar

I try not to consume products with added sugars, particularly because it’s difficult to find out how much there is.

Michel and Augustin make it easy. They write about having added just a speck of sugar (une pointe de sucre) right in the ingredients list. If it wasn’t for this, I would never buy their delicious yogurt.

Immune to cancel-culture

Cancel-culture is spreading far and wide. Some people want to forcefully rename a company that uses the word Eskimo because they believe that it is offensive (despite Eskimos being fine with it).

I already denounced cancel-culture multiple times, but I’m not stopping there. I’m actively defending myself against it.

I’m not using big tech platforms censors. I won’t knowingly work for leftist radicals. I won’t succumb to performing disastrous actions. I will maximise control over everything so no radical group commits mutiny. I will refer to the coronavirus as “kung flu” for the fun of it.

E-sports

Gaming, something that many believe to be a waste of time, is being rebranded as e-sports, something that sounds prestigious.

This rebranding, along with the creation of high-quality shooter games, is what it takes to have young people (unknowingly) commit to the future of warcraft.

Future wars, after all, will be fought remotely to avoid casualties. Watch closely: today’s Fortnite champions will be tomorrow’s robot-commanding generals. Ernest Cline’s novel Armada was a prophecy.

Half-asleep

Being half-asleep is the greatest feeling in the world. One feels awake, but it takes an alarm clock to actually wake up and understand what was going on.
